Ford Motor Corp announces integration plan with Microsoft 'Hohm' Software and Utility Power grids.

In a press release on the auto maker's website was a little blurb.

Ford and Microsoft take electric vehicle technology Hohm

Ford and Microsoft are leading the way toward a more energy-efficient future by announcing a new solution that will make electric vehicle ownership easier and more affordable for consumers. Ford will be the first automaker to use Microsoft's home energy management application, Hohm, starting with the Focus Electric next year. Hohm, an Internet-based service, will help owners determine when and how to most efficiently and affordably recharge their battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, and will help utility companies manage the added demands of electric vehicles on the electrical grid. more...

So I pondered a bit about what this may mean for us Canadians. IF the automakers get their collective act together on this, then the demand for Residential Electrical Load will increase in relation to the litres(gallons) of fuel NOT consumed by the American / Canadian automobile operating public.

There are problems afoot though, and here is the rub, the US department of Energy's own statistics still show that through the years 2020 and 2030, the increase in Green House Gas emissions will still be unabated, and that there was a marked decline in the fall of 2008, with a decline in GHG's emitted.

So even though you may be thinking that the announcement is a good thing for everyone, some deeper questions need to be answered first.

A) Where is the replacement energy going to be purchased from when the volumes of oil start decreasing, either by demand or by supply constraints?

B)  Who is most likely having to pay more for their local Electric Utility Bill, because upwards of 1 Million Homes in the USA will be demanding electricity, after 6 pm, just as the solar farms in the east are getting darker? (Remember Solar only works when the sun is shining on the panels)

C) What government of the day will protect Canada's interests when the US Demand for energy will be so high that the rest of the electric grid will need 'Infrastructure Improvements', that were not anticipated, back when Gasoline was $0.90 to $1.00 per litre (Retail), and Gasoline Equivalent Electricity (Electricity derived from Nat Gas/ Coal / Heavy Oil/ Nuclear) is factored in (possibly $1.50 to $2.00 per Litre)?

Lets hope our efforts in NQW to 'Get Green' about our environment , don't wind up getting trashed because our government of the day decided to 'play nice' with the elephant down south.
